For most trips, the best time to visit Puglia is May, June or September. The sea is warm enough for swimming from June, the light is long, and the heat and crowds of July and August are either still to come or already gone. Every month has its reasons, though, and this guide goes through all twelve, with real weather averages, the festivals worth planning around and what each season is good for.
The short answer
| Season | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| May and June | Beaches opening, walking, Bari’s San Nicola feast | June gets hot inland; book coast hotels early |
| July and August | Long beach days, summer festivals, late nights | Peak heat, peak prices, busy roads around 15 August |
| September and October | Warm sea in September, harvests, quieter towns | Lidos start closing after mid-September; October is wetter |
| November to February | City breaks, olive oil, winter feasts, local life | Many beach hotels and seafront restaurants close |
| March and April | Wildflowers, Easter rites, mild hiking weather | Changeable days; the sea is still cold |
Puglia’s weather, month by month
Puglia has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. The table uses the two main weather stations on the coast and in Salento. The Lecce figures run a little hotter in summer because the station sits inland on the flat Salento plain.

Figures are the 1991-2020 averages from the WMO climate normals published by NOAA for the Bari Palese and Lecce Galatina stations (station data sheets), rounded. A rainy day means at least 1 mm of rain. October and November are the wettest months in Lecce, at about 100 mm each, against roughly 23 mm in July. To compare these numbers with a city you know, see our Lecce weather comparison with major US cities.
Month by month
January
The coldest month, with highs around 13°C and a rainy day or two most weeks. It is also one of the most local: the towns belong to the people who live there, and a seat at a good trattoria rarely needs booking. On 16 January, Novoli near Lecce lights the Fòcara, a bonfire of vine cuttings the Fondazione Fòcara Novoli describes as about 25 meters high, for the feast of Sant’Antonio Abate.
February
Still cool, but the days are longer and almond trees often flower in the countryside. Carnival is the draw. Putignano, which bills its carnival as one of Europe’s oldest, parades its papier-mache floats on the weekends before Lent; Shrove Tuesday falls on 9 February in 2027, and the carnival foundation publishes the parade dates each winter.
March
Spring arrives unevenly: a warm, bright week can follow a wet, windy one. The countryside is at its greenest, with wildflowers along the dry-stone walls, and it is good weather for walking. Easter falls on 28 March in 2027, which brings Holy Week into the month.
Taranto’s Holy Week rites are the most famous in the region. According to the Arciconfraternita del Carmine, the Procession of the Mysteries leaves the Carmine church at 17:00 on Good Friday and moves so slowly that it returns only the next morning; the Addolorata procession walks through the night before. Book a room early if you want to see it.
April
Highs around 20°C and about six rainy days make April a fine month for towns, coastal walks and long lunches outdoors. The sea is still cold for most swimmers. Two national holidays, 25 April (Liberation Day) and 1 May, often turn into long weekends, so expect Italian visitors and fuller hotels around those dates.
May
For many people, the best month of the year. Highs reach the mid-20s, rain is rare, and the beach season opens late in the month: the 2026 regional beach ordinance set the official season from 23 May to 13 September. Bari celebrates its patron saint from 7 to 9 May. In 2026, the Basilica di San Nicola program ran a historical parade on the evening of the 7th, carried the saint’s statue out to sea by fishing boat on the 8th, and closed with the main service in the basilica on the 9th.
June
Summer proper. The sea warms through the month, the lidi (beach clubs) are open, and sunset comes around 20:30 late in the month. Lecce averages 15 days over 30°C in June, so plan sightseeing for the morning. Early June is quieter and usually cheaper than July; our guide to Puglia’s Blue Flag beaches is a good place to choose a stretch of coast.
July
Hot, dry and bright, with about 25 days over 30°C in Lecce. Life shifts to the edges of the day. Our Italian word of the month is controra, the early-afternoon hours when shutters come down, streets empty and nobody sensible is out in the sun. Evenings are for the piazza. In the Valle d’Itria, the opera Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca ran from 14 July to 2 August in 2026, with performances in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale; our guide to trulli country covers the towns around it.
August
Peak season. Italians take their holidays around Ferragosto on 15 August, so beaches, roads and restaurants are at their busiest and prices at their highest; our piece on Ferragosto in Puglia explains the holiday. It is also festival month. The Notte della Taranta, a festival of Salento’s folk music, toured 20 towns from 30 July to 19 August in 2026 before its final concert in Melpignano on 22 August, according to the festival foundation. Lecce honors its patron saints at the end of the month; the Comune di Lecce scheduled the 2026 program from 23 to 26 August, with the procession on the 24th.
Late August is when the luminarie, the tall arches of festival lights, go up over the streets of town after town for their saints’ feasts. Even if you never plan around one, you will probably walk under one.
September
The insider’s month. The sea holds much of its summer warmth, the heat eases to the high 20s, and once Italian schools go back the coast empties fast. The official season ended on 13 September in 2026, but beach clubs may stay open voluntarily and many do through September. Inland, it is vendemmia (grape harvest) season.
October
Mild and golden, with highs in the low 20s, but also the start of the wet season: Lecce averages about six rainy days and its highest rainfall of the year. It is harvest time. Coldiretti Puglia opened the 2026 olive harvest on 18 September, and new-season oil reaches shops from late October; our guide to the olive harvest and olio nuovo explains when and how to buy it. Some seasonal flights into Bari and Brindisi are cut after October, so check routes before booking.
November
Cooler, greener and quiet. Highs sit around 18°C, the olive mills run long days, and 1 November (All Saints) is a public holiday. Many seaside hotels and restaurants close for the winter around now, while the cities carry on as usual. 11 November is San Martino, the day new wine is traditionally opened across Italy, and an excuse for a long dinner.
December
Short days and a full calendar. Bari keeps a winter feast for San Nicola on 6 December, described by the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto as starting with a dawn mass, and Lecce’s papier-mache nativity fair fills the cloister of the Teatini for most of the month. Our guide to Puglia in winter covers what stays open, the living nativities and the January and February feasts.
Crowds, prices and holidays
The busiest weeks are the two around 15 August, followed by the rest of July and August and the Easter weekend. Accommodation on the coast is priced for that peak, and the best-located places book out months ahead. In the cities, demand is steadier through the year.
Italy’s national holidays also move the crowds. Beyond Easter Monday, they are 1 and 6 January, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 4 October, 1 November and 8, 25 and 26 December (set by Law 260/1949 as amended; 4 October, the feast of Saint Francis, returned as a national holiday in 2026 under Law 151/2025). A holiday that falls near a weekend becomes a ponte (bridge), and Italians travel. Local patron saints’ days close offices and some shops in their own town too.
Our pick for every kind of trip

- Sightseeing and walking: May, and late September to October.
- Food and olive oil: October and November, when mills are pressing and the new oil is in the shops.
- Festivals: May for Bari, late July and August for Salento’s music and the patron saints’ feasts.
- A lower-cost trip: November to March, outside Christmas, carnival weekends and Easter.
- Seeing everyday life before a move: January or February, when the region is at its most ordinary.
