Lecce as a Base for Salento: Trains, Buses, Beaches, Parking and Costs (2026)

Photo by Arno Senoner, portfolio on Unsplash

Yes, Lecce is the best base in Salento if you want to get around by train. Gallipoli is a direct ride of about 1 hour 40 minutes for €5.40, Otranto takes 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes with a change at Maglie for €4.50, and Brindisi airport is about 45 minutes away for €4.70. The catches: Sundays are thin, Leuca and Porto Cesareo are slow without a car, and the summer beach buses stop in mid-September.

Updated October 2026 · Puglia Everyday research

This guide is the practical side of staying in Lecce for a week or more: what the trains and buses actually reach, when a car makes sense, where to park, the tourist tax and what a longer stay costs. For the sights themselves, start with our guide to Lecce, the Florence of the South. Fares and timetables were checked on 26 October 2026 in the Trenitalia journey planner, which sells FS Sud Est tickets.

Key finding: Puglia Everyday research (October 2026): from Lecce, one-way weekday train fares are €5.40 to Gallipoli (direct, 1 hour 37 to 1 hour 51 minutes), €4.50 to Otranto (with a change at Maglie), €6.30 to Gagliano Leuca and €4.70 to Brindisi Airport including the airport bus. On a November Sunday we found only two direct trains to Otranto.

From Lecce by train, one-way weekday fares in October 2026: Gallipoli €5.40 direct, Otranto €4.50 with a change at Maglie, Gagliano Leuca €6.30 direct, Brindisi Airport €4.70 by train plus airport bus

Is Lecce a good base for Salento?

For most visitors, yes. Lecce is where the Salento rail network starts: FS Sud Est (Ferrovie del Sud Est, the regional railway) runs lines from Lecce to Gallipoli, to Maglie and on to Gagliano del Capo, and, since 12 October 2026, through Nardò to Gagliano again. Mainline trains go north to Brindisi and Bari. No other town in the area connects to as many places without a car.

It is also a city of about 94,000 people with a university, so restaurants, bars and shops stay open in winter, when many beach towns close up. The trade-off is the sea: the nearest beach is San Cataldo, about 14 km away by road, and the famous coastlines are 40 minutes to over an hour by car. If your trip is mostly about the beach in July, a coastal base may suit you better. If you want variety, with a different town each day and the evening passeggiata (the evening stroll) back in Piazza Sant’Oronzo, Lecce works well.

Getting to Lecce

  • From Brindisi airport: the nearest airport. The SITA Sud and Marozzi coach goes to Piazzale Carmelo Bene (the former Foro Boario) in about 40 minutes for €6.50, or €8 if you buy on board, according to the timetable in force from 1 June 2026. Timetables usually change in early November, so check the current one on SITA Sud. Or take the airport bus to Brindisi station and the train on: 40 to 53 minutes for €4.70 in total in the Trenitalia planner.
  • From Bari: Frecciarossa high-speed trains take 1 hour 19 minutes to 1 hour 31 minutes (from €24 on the day we checked), and the regional train about 1 hour 41 minutes for €13.20.
  • By car: Lecce is about 40 minutes from Brindisi on the SS613 dual carriageway. If you plan to drive in Italy on a foreign license, read our guide to driving in Puglia on a US or UK license first.

Lecce station is just outside the old town, roughly a 15-minute walk from Piazza Sant’Oronzo.

What the train gets you: fares and times from Lecce

We searched every route below in the Trenitalia journey planner for a weekday (Tuesday 27 October 2026). FS Sud Est has run its winter timetable since 14 September 2026, with 22 trains a day on the Lecce to Gallipoli line and 20 on Lecce to Maglie to Gagliano del Capo, and replacement buses on weekdays between Maglie and Otranto, as the railway announced in September (Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno). Fares are one-way, per adult.

The Gallipoli line is the easy win: a direct train, no booking, and most of the ride passes through olive groves and dry-stone walls before the sea appears at the end. Otranto is easy too, as long as you know about the bus change at Maglie on weekdays. Leuca and Porto Cesareo are possible, but they take most of a day there and back.

Sundays and holidays

This is the part most guides leave out. For Sunday 8 November 2026 the planner showed only three options to Gallipoli (the direct ones took 1 hour 18 minutes to 1 hour 29 minutes, for the same €5.40), four to Gagliano Leuca and two direct trains to Otranto, at 10:30 and 17:00. Treat Sunday as a Lecce day, or check the return times before you leave. Full timetables are on the FS Sud Est website.

Buses and the beaches

Lecce’s city buses are run by SGM, and they go to San Cataldo, Lecce’s own beach. Tickets cost €1.20, or €1.50 on board. Our step-by-step guide to Lecce to the beach by bus covers the routes and the summer lines.

In summer the province runs SalentoinBus, a network of seasonal lines from Lecce to the coast. In 2026 it ran from 13 June to 13 September with 30 lines, including line 106 from Lecce through Maglie to Otranto, about an hour each way. It is summer-only: there is no service now, and as of 26 October 2026 the 2027 dates have not been announced. Check the Provincia di Lecce website in late spring.

Car or no car?

Here is how the two compare from Lecce. Drive times are our calculation from road distances, without traffic or summer parking queues, so treat them as approximate.

DestinationBy car (our calculation)By public transportOur verdict
Gallipoli40 km, about 40 minDirect train, 1h37 to 1h51, €5.40Train works all year
Otranto48 km, about 50 minTrain and bus via Maglie, 1h33 to 2h26, €4.50Train works; car is faster
Porto Cesareo28 km, about 35 minTrain and bus, about 1h40, €4.80, 3 a dayCar, or SalentoinBus in summer
Santa Maria di Leuca83 km, about 1h20Train to Gagliano Leuca, about 2h, €6.30, plus taxiCar, unless you enjoy a long day
Torre dell’Orso30 km, about 35 minSalentoinBus in summer onlyCar outside summer
Brindisi airport44 km, about 40 minCoach about 40 min, €6.50; train and bus 40 to 53 min, €4.70Public transport is fine

Our verdict: for a week split between Lecce, Gallipoli and Otranto, you can manage without a car outside the summer bus season. If the Adriatic coves, Leuca and the smaller beaches are the point of the trip, rent a car for two or three days rather than the whole stay.

Driving into Lecce: the ZTL and parking

The old town is a ZTL (zona a traffico limitato, a limited-traffic zone) with cameras at the gates. Some gates are closed to unauthorized cars around the clock, and the rest switch off only at set hours on weekdays. Our guide to the Lecce ZTL has the current hours and gates. The simplest plan is to park outside the walls and walk in.

Street parking on the blue lines is paid Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 14:00 and 16:00 to 21:00, from €0.60 to €1.50 an hour depending on the zone, and free on Sundays and public holidays, according to the SGM rate table. The better deal for a day out is one of the three park-and-ride car parks:

Car parkParking onlyPark and rideBus lines
Ex Foro Boario (Piazzale Carmelo Bene)€0.60 an hour€2 a day with the bus, 7:00 to 21:00M1, C2, C3
Largo Cimitero€0.60 an hour€2 a day with the bus, 7:00 to 21:00M1, C2, C3
Torre del Parco€0.60 an hour€2 a day with the bus, 7:00 to 21:00C2, C3, R6

If you move to Lecce, residents can get a blue-line parking permit for their street area; see our guide to resident parking permits in Lecce.

The Lecce tourist tax

Lecce charges an imposta di soggiorno (tourist tax) per person per night, for up to five nights (seven in short-term rentals). The rates below were set in February 2026 and apply from 1 April; high season runs from 1 April to 31 October. Residents of Lecce are exempt. Source: Comune di Lecce.

Type of stayHigh season (1 Apr to 31 Oct)Low season (1 Nov to 31 Mar)
5-star hotels€5€4
4-star hotels, historic residences€4.50€3
1- to 3-star hotels, RTA (serviced residences)€4€2
B&Bs, guest rooms, holiday homes, agriturismi, hostels, campsites€3€2
Short-term rentals (locazioni brevi)€2.50€1.50

For a couple in a B&B for a week in November, that is €2 x 2 people x 5 nights, or €20 in total (our calculation).

Staying longer: rents and prices

If you are thinking about a month or more, Lecce is one of the few places in Salento with a year-round rental market, although it is small. In September 2026 asking rents in Lecce averaged €9.38 per square meter per month, up 3.65% in a year, and €9.91 in the Centro area, according to Immobiliare.it. For a 70-square-meter apartment that works out at about €660 a month, or about €690 in the center (our calculation). On the day we checked, the portal listed about 193 homes for rent in Lecce against 1,028 for sale, so start looking early.

Asking prices to buy averaged €1,673 per square meter (€1,961 in the center), up 1.83% in a year. For what that buys compared with other towns, see what €100k, €200k and €400k buy in Puglia.

Who Lecce suits as a base

Lecce suits travelers without a car, slow travelers staying a week or more, remote workers who want a real city in winter, and anyone visiting between October and May, when the beach towns are quiet. It suits beach-every-day trips in July and August less well, and trips focused on the Valle d’Itria and the trulli, about 1 hour 30 minutes north by car, even less.

For the trulli side of Puglia, Monopoli makes a better base. If you are weighing a move rather than a holiday, our insider guide to living in Lecce covers neighborhoods and daily life, and the city’s Vito Fazzi hospital has a 24-hour emergency department (see emergency care in Salento). For the weather month by month, see the best time to visit Puglia.

FAQ

Is Lecce or Otranto the better base for Salento?

Can I visit Santa Maria di Leuca from Lecce without a car?

Yes, but it takes most of a day. The direct FS Sud Est train to Gagliano Leuca station takes about two hours, and the station is a few kilometers inland from the Leuca seafront, so you need a taxi or a local connection for the last part. In summer, SalentoinBus lines run to Leuca.

Do trains run from Lecce on Sundays?
